The mythological tradition of man-animal hybrids seamlessly transitioned into the modern genre of fantasy fiction and role-playing games. Here, the term “beastmen” is most commonly used to describe a diverse range of humanoid creatures with animalistic features. In the world of Warhammer Fantasy , beastmen are a major antagonistic force, described as “wild and crude creatures of animal lusts and vitriolic temperament” who serve the dark gods of Chaos. Their first single, "Speeed King," was a high-octane tribute to amphetamines, and its cover art featured a bowl of suspicious white powder and straws. The single was banned, which only increased the band's notoriety and landed them a spot on the legendary Top of the Pops television show. Comprised of Julian Hewings, Patrick Murray, Boag, and Stevie Hussey, These Animal Men were portrayed as drug-addicted bad boys, a persona they actively cultivated. However, their moment in the sun was brief. The release of Oasis's Definitely Maybe shifted the musical landscape, and the NWONW movement was left behind, taking These Animal Men with it. The group recorded one more album, Accident & Emergency , before quietly splitting up in 1997.
