The Indian government has taken significant steps against OTT platforms. In July 2025, the Central government banned for displaying obscene content. This action was taken under the Information Technology Act of 2000 (specifically sections 67 and 67A), which deals with publishing or transmitting obscene or sexually explicit material, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. These platforms were found to have content that, in a prima facie view, violated these laws. Prior to this, the government had already banned 18 platforms for degrading depictions of women. Overall, public access to 43 OTT platforms has been disabled for displaying obscene content.
