In a traditional setup, a user inserts a valid subscription card into a primary Linux-based satellite receiver (such as a Dreambox or Vu+). The receiver runs CCcam in server mode, reading the cryptographic control words (CWs) from the smart card and broadcasting them to other receivers connected to the network running CCcam in client mode. The clients use these keys to descramble encrypted television signals.
