The McMinn County Walking Horse Celebration is an annual charity event held at the showgrounds in Athens, Tennessee. For years, the event has been a staple of the local community calendar.
Law enforcement activity has not been limited to drugs. In January 2026, a joint investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office CID, the Vonore Police Department, and the Madisonville Police Department dismantled a that was active across multiple counties, including McMinn.
The legal process has been slow and complex. In 2023, several of the lower-level defendants accepted plea deals, agreeing to testimony or probation in exchange for reduced charges. As of late 2023/early 2024, the cases against Guy and Boring continued to wind through the judicial system, with defense attorneys attempting to suppress evidence and the prosecution seeking restitution for the charitable organizations defrauded.
"It was a significant seizure of a dangerous drug and a well-coordinated, executed operation between all agencies," stated McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy via local reports.
