The film was shot digitally by director of photography Claudio Miranda. To seamlessly integrate the live-action footage of the actors with the hyper-realistic CGI faces of Benjamin at various ages, the lighting had to be absolutely perfect. The visual effects team needed to know exactly how the light behaved on set to make the digital faces look believable. This was accomplished through the use of HDRi technology. They captured 360-degree, high-dynamic-range photographs of the actual filming locations, which recorded the precise color, intensity, and direction of every light source in the scene.
