The majority of the film takes place inside Joel's mind during the procedure. As he watches his memories of Clementine disappearing—from their first meeting on a beach in Montauk to their bitter fights—he realizes he doesn't want to lose the good moments along with the bad. He begins to fight the process, trying to hide Clementine in memories that don't belong to her (like his childhood) to save her from being erased.
