Horny Lily

The story of the horny lily begins in the mid-20th century with daylily hybridizers. Daylilies ( Hemerocallis ) have been cultivated for centuries, but the first "horned" forms appeared spontaneously as mutations in the 1950s. Pioneer hybridizers like Dr. George L. Stout and Elizabeth Nesmith noticed occasional seedlings with petal extensions that looked like small claws or horns.

In the landscape, these lilies serve as the "divas" of the mid-to-late summer border. They bridge the gap between the fading of the early summer perennials and the arrival of the autumn bloomers. Because of their intense fragrance, they are best positioned near patios, walkways, or open windows where the scent can be appreciated. However, gardeners should be wary of placing them in small, enclosed spaces, as the perfume can become overwhelming. horny lily
