The (also known as the Persian calendar or Jalali calendar) is a solar calendar. It begins with the Hijra – the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. However, unlike the lunar Hijri calendar, the Shamsi calendar is tied to the vernal equinox (the first day of spring – Nowruz).
