These sophisticated worms are designed to overcome the slow "getting off the ground" phase of infection. Before a hitlist worm is released, the attacker collects a list of potentially vulnerable machines. When the worm is released onto an initial machine on this hitlist, it begins scanning down the list. As it infects a machine, it divides the hitlist in half, communicating a half to the new victim and keeping the other half. This rapid division allows the worm to establish itself on all vulnerable machines in the hitlist within seconds.
