Driven by the need to experience the landscapes that inspired Cézanne, Steenhuis traveled to France immediately after graduating college in June 1980. She enrolled at in Aix-en-Provence. What was intended to be a temporary educational excursion quickly transformed into a lifelong calling.

In addition to her artistic practice, Steinhaus is also committed to teaching and community engagement. She has taught courses in fine arts, sculpture, and digital media at various institutions, including the School of Visual Arts in New York and the California Institute of the Arts.
