The arrival of a young, charismatic inmate named Tommy (Gil Bellows) brings a glimmer of hope. Tommy reveals that, in a previous prison term, a cellmate confessed to committing the very murders for which Andy was convicted. With evidence in sight, Andy begs Warden Norton to reopen the case. But the warden refuses; Andy knows too much about his illicit financial schemes. Instead of helping, the warden has Tommy murdered, and sentences Andy to two months in solitary confinement for his "insolence."
