She watches in helpless horror as a guard picks up the crying toddler and hurls her into the camp's electrified fence. With Magda's body at the fence, Rosa is overwhelmed by a "wolf's screech" rising in her throat. To prevent herself from screaming and being killed, she shoves Magda's shawl into her mouth, "stuffed it in and stuffed it in, until she was swallowing up the wolf's screech and tasting the cinnamon and almond depth of Magda's saliva".
