The Indian government has significantly strengthened its anti-piracy laws. The Cinematograph (Amendment) Act, 2023, introduced strict penal provisions to deter film piracy. Under this law, offenders face imprisonment ranging from three months to three years and fines starting at Rs. 3 lakh, which can go up to 5% of a film's total production cost. The law also targets unauthorized recording in cinemas and illegal online transmission. Authorities have become more aggressive, appointing nodal officers to order the removal of pirated content and requiring internet service providers to block access to around 800 piracy websites. In a further escalation, a Delhi High Court order in November 2025 directed major internet service providers to block a wide range of websites, Telegram channels, and other online platforms facilitating movie piracy.
