"Ammonia is synthesized industrially by the direct combination of nitrogen and hydrogen over a promoted iron catalyst. The reaction ( N_2 + 3H_2 \rightleftharpoons 2NH_3 ) is reversible, exothermic (( \Delta H = -92.4 , \textkJ/mol )), and accompanied by a decrease in volume. According to Le Chatelier’s principle, high pressure (200–300 atm) favors ammonia yield, but excessively high temperatures (above 500°C) shift equilibrium left. Hence, a compromise temperature of 400–450°C is used to achieve a reasonable reaction rate without drastically lowering equilibrium conversion. The catalyst is magnetite (( Fe_3O_4 )) promoted with ( Al_2O_3 ) and ( K_2O ) to enhance activity and poison resistance."
